Imagine you get an email from corporate@McDonalds.com. Sounds legitimate, as long as you expected a message from McDonalds. However, let’s say you received an email from mcdonaldscorporate@gmail.com. That immediately looks like spam, junk, or a phishing attempt.

Anyone with Internet access can create a free email address through Gmail, Yahoo!, AOL, Hotmail, or many others.

The amount of small businesses operating under a free email address through one of these popular services is incredible. Not only is it unprofessional, it also creates an immediate skepticism in recipients of these messages and opens the way for hackers to impersonate the company.

For example, if Pioneer Landscaping operates under PioneerLandscaping@gmail.com, a criminal could easily impersonate the owner by sending out emails using PioneerLandscapingCo@gmail.com. The hacker could request updated credit card numbers and contact info from Pioneer’s customers. This wouldn’t be difficult, either, because any available @gmail.com email address is free to the public.

A professional, business email address has your company’s official website in it, e.g. contact@pioneer.media or corporate@mcdonalds.com.

We offer custom email addresses as part of our website hosting and management service.
