Can I see how my website looked in the past?
Yes, you can! With a free resource called the Internet Archive, you can see how almost any website looked at various points in time.
Why would you need an old version of a web page?
Sometimes it’s more out of necessity than nostalgia! Consider some examples:
- You’re going to court and need to know exactly how a website looked on a certain day.
- You need to know which version of your Terms & Conditions was live on a certain date.
- You redesigned your website and want to compare the before and after.
- You’ve revised a web page a few times and want to see content that was there a few months ago.
- You need content older than the oldest WordPress post revision.
- You need to recover content from an older page that you deleted.
Clearly, there are several reasons why it might help to pull up an older version of a website.
How do I use the Wayback Machine?
The Internet Archive has hundreds of billions of web pages saved at various points in time. Visit archive.org/web to use what’s called the Wayback Machine. Enter your website’s URL, then choose one of the available dated snapshots.
Are there any limitations?
You might not always find an image you need, but the text is usually there! And not every revision will be saved, but you’ll generally find several snapshots to choose from.
